I’m Bored…with food

I’m bored with food. 😒 Well, not really.  Actually, I still love food…. I’ve been loving it too much again though.  Haha!

It’s crazy how just a few weeks of enjoying your fave foods can make you lose your mind at the table and start packing them back on.  I also haven’t weighed myself in 3 weeks – THAT is a problem.  For me the scales is my accountability partner. I don’t think much has changed though, Clothes still fit and all. It’s just that the mind will tell you LIES, LIES, and MORE LIES all the while the pounds creep back on. The scales don’t lie.

Last month I went on a business trip for a week and ate out daily.  I was able to minimize the food damage by skipping breakfast and doing exercises in my hotel room every evening. … but I felt so sluggish after sitting daily and eating such a wide variety of foods.

When I returned home my routine was busted!  I’ve never really got back in the groove but I need to.  I’ve tried, but going out with friends here and there is sabotaging my efforts.  Sigh.

Looking back over the past few weeks I have figured out that a lot of my issue now is boredom with the food I’m eating.  I’m not wanting the go-to salads and vegetables that I’ve been eating so much of for more than 2 years now.  Nothing looks appealing except pizza, chicken wings, etc. 😂😂   I actually made a salad last week for dinner, took a few bites and tossed it all out.  Just wasn’t appealing to me.

So, I am currently trying to think of new foods, and new ways to prepare them.  If this is going to be a lifestyle change I need to really work hard to keep it fresh and satisfying, otherwise I will set myself up for failure.

Today was one of those days where I swear I had a tapeworm.  I just felt hungry all day.  Then it dawned on me that 1) I had not taken my vitamins in a couple of days, and 2) I’ve eaten much less protein this week. I could never be vegan etc.  I don’t eat much meat at all but a little keeps hunter at bay for me.

I couldn’t decide what to eat … I didn’t want to thaw food and cook it. So I made a PB&J (natural peanut butter, strawberry All Fruit spread on toasted sprouted breads) with a glass of Almond milk.  I didn’t measure, weigh, or count anything  just made it and ate it.  Then made another half….😣  😂  …not hungry anymore though.

When I started my journey to get healthy and lose weight I realized it really was going to be a journey with ups and downs, and ins and outs, and good days and not so good days.  It’s all good. It’s life! Enjoy and learn from it all.

I’m thinking about expanding this blog a bit to include more about life and what we humans face while in these vessels. We’ll see. Until the next time…

Summer Spread

You will know when summer officially hits around my home because there will always be melon…. watermelon and cantaloupe. 😋.

Love watermelon especially… seriously, my summer Sunday routine includes church, then going to get a watermelon so I can cut it up and toss the rind for the Monday trash.

I buy seedless ones.  There are some watermelon purists out there who only buy the seeded ones.  I don’t eat seeded watermelons or fish with lots of bones for the same reason…. I hate excessive spitting during eating… too messy for me.  Just my preference.  When I was a little girl my family would drive from NY to GA and my dad would buy several big seeded watermelons to bring back home  …. and amongst them was always a couple of little “Sugar Babies” (small round seedless sweet watermelons) for me.

I also love summer food colors so I decided to do a mostly clean eating colorful food week.  When I do this, I like to include eating mostly raw, colorful foods, with low protein, and a smaller amount of cooked green veggies. This really helps when I need to have enough food to keep my energy levels going and my hunger down but also need to watch my caloric intake and do a mini-cleanse. Anyway, summer fruits and veggies do the trick.

I will eat some protein because I’m not vegan or such, and eating a bit of protein keeps my metabolism fired up, and seems keeps my hair and nails in better shape. So, at some point in the week, I will throw a bit of salmon, or chicken on the grill…. a couple ounces per day is usually enough.

Mango Mania

I like mangoes, but I don’t recall EVER buying a fresh one … until this past weekend.

I was strolling through Sprouts Farmers Market, one of my favorite places, and there they were, a big table of beautiful mangoes.  My first instinct was to take Dionne Warwick’s advice and …walk on by… because any time I’ve seen mangoes they were at least a dollar each.  That’s not a lot but I’m a budgeter and I sorta get a thrill from seeing how far I can stretch a dollar.  However, the bright, juicy fruit called out my name so I rounded the corner of the table and what did I see???  A sign that read… 3 for $1. 👀. For real??

Well, say no more, I bought $5 worth of mangoes …. for those who are slow at math like me, that’s 15 mangoes!!!  WIN! STRIKE! SCORE!

CONFESSION… I had to get online to see how to peel and eat it.  Haha. Easy though.

I tried one, and boy was it delicious!

so, what do I plan to do with 14 mangos.  I am going to peel and cube them all, place them in a freezer bag and then do the same to some fresh blueberries once they arrive.  Then on some sweltering summer Georgia day, I’m going to break out all the deliciousness and make the best mango-blueberry smoothie ever.  Of course, I will let y’all know how this turns out in some future blog.

I also saw an easy Mango Salsa recipe that sounds perfect for summer parties.

Anyway, I started to wonder about the benefits of eating mangoes…if there were any. A quick research session yielded tons information. In summary:

My Summer Selections Are Back

When it gets to that time of the year when I go out to one of my favorite grocery stores (Sprouts) and come home with this type of stash, you can rest assured that I am entering into my summer eating pattern. 😊

Washing today’s “catch” in vinegar water.

As much as I love my winter foods (rutabagas, sweet potatoes, squashes, etc.), by this time of the year I am literally craving colorful raw vegetables. Typically, I would have lettuces too, but with the current ‘ban’ on some lettuces I decided to have lettuce-less salad this week. Look at how beautiful and colorful this food is.  It’s going to be a wonderful eating week.

I haven’t researched what I am about to say here but I think eating some portion of colorful raw vegetables everyday helps to alleviate or lessen many of the physical problems that plague Americans particularly, i.e. constipation, poor immune system, other digestive issues, allergies, mineral deficiencies, blood pressure issues, cholesterol issues, etc.  […again, I’m no doctor or medical professional, so this is strictly my opinion].

I even bought fresh mangos today… I can’t remember the last time I did that; possibly! I never have. 🤔  I’ve had mangos before but never bought fresh ones myself.  They were 3 for .$99 today at Sprouts. Those little beauties came right home with me… yes, they did. 😌

I gained 2-3 pounds over the winter months.😞 Hopefully my summer foods will help to melt those couple of extra pounds away. I am not too worried though because I started a new exercise program and I am slightly more muscular than I’ve been in a long time.  I will share more about it in an upcoming blog sombe sure to FOLLOW my blog .

‘Eggspert’ Advice 😏

I  blogged about the benefits of eggs in the past but I have more eggs-pert knowledge to pass along 😏.  People, seriously, I am not the originator of all the juicy facts I share on my blog…. I am just passing along the knowledge so you’ll have some interesting to read when you stop and see me here.  I like research and information so I’m always finding cool stuff.  I’d post more of it here but my day job takes up most of my real life … but no complaints here because it also pays the bills. Can I get an Amen! ✌🏽🙌🏽

Anyway… so I wrote before that I love eggs….and I was eating lots of them… until this year. In January after a horrific sinus infection eggs started giving me the worst indigestion ever.  I was so bummed…. they were a main staple. I usually bought eggs that said Natural, no hormones, yadda yadda on the carton. In other words I bought eggs that were $2 to $3 per carton, not 69 cents.  I stopped eating them for a few weeks but after a severe craving for a boiled egg one day I bought a carton of expensive organic no hormone etc. eggs, about $4.  I boiled a couple and ate them. I waited for that familiar choking sensation in my throat.  Nothing. I had no effect from these eggs. YAY!  Ate them all…. not at one time but over the next few days. I went back to buy more of the less expensive $2 per carton eggs; because I thought my egg issue was over.  Scrambled a couple and within the hour ….suffering. 😩

I was suspicious.  Why some eggs and not others would cause an issue. Shortly after, a friend gave me a dozen fresh, no hormone, farm eggs from some well-loved yard chickens owns by a family member. I took them…. more because I was curious to know how they would affect me. Well, ate them and nothings happened….they were soooo delish.

My conclusion… I think I am having a reaction to egg processing rather than the eggs themselves. Maybe what the chickens are fed, or how they are raised, or stuff injected into mass produced chickens.  I don’t know….I just know that I need friends with chickens…and thankfully I might have a few 🐥🐣

So, here is a tidbit I learned this week. I had a lot of eggs in my refrigerator from testing which would cause and issue and which wouldn’t. After a few weeks I didn’t know if they were still any good. Well, I found a way to determine if your eggs are old or not. This is so cool.

You can do a water test.  I bet everyone knew this except me. Haha. Anyway, you place an egg in a bowl of water.  If it sinks, then it’s fresh.  If it floats, then it’s old so throw it out. Of course I had to try it myself with my eggs. So, here ya go:

Sure enough, one floated and one sunk. The floating one was much older than the one that sunk. I would have tossed it anyway just by the date alone…. although I hear eggs can last way past the date on the carton. All of my eggs were past the Best Used By date.
