Sneaky Little Pounds

It’s crazy how pounds creep back if I don’t stay diligent in my efforts to stay aware of my food choices.  Sigh. 😒

I am not in trouble yet but I  am see how and why folks lose a bunch of weight then slowly over the following weeks it creeps back on… sometimes more. Here is what I think happens:

1. There is an initial rush of excitement after losing weight.  Your body is in burn mode so you are granted the ability to eat a bit more without any changes to your weight.

2. While being on track, you probably are earning less sugar and carbs and your body has gotten used to it.  However, once you start eating a few more carbs and more sugar, your body will retain fluid, and worse, you get addicted to it again and start to crave it, where during weight loss you hardly thought of it.

3. You probably started exercising less and drinking less water.

4.  Basically,  you just quit paying attention…. eating more and eating out more.

I don’t know…. that’s just what happens to me. I get it, because I have done all of the above.  So, I have gained 3.4 lbs in the past three months  yeah, that’s not a lot but I need to reverse things now, not after I’ve regained 10 or 20… or 30+ pounds.

So, when you see this in my refrigerator… you know I’m back to business.

It’s found to be a green veggie week for sure.  With summer foods coming back in it should be easier to get on track. I love veggies which you know if you have followed my blog. Going to do a lot of raw veggies this week to get a jumpstart.  The fiber fills you up and helps with detox.

I’m ready!  How about you??

Peace and love!✌🏽💕✌🏽💕✌🏽💕

My Summer Selections Are Back

When it gets to that time of the year when I go out to one of my favorite grocery stores (Sprouts) and come home with this type of stash, you can rest assured that I am entering into my summer eating pattern. 😊

Washing today’s “catch” in vinegar water.

As much as I love my winter foods (rutabagas, sweet potatoes, squashes, etc.), by this time of the year I am literally craving colorful raw vegetables. Typically, I would have lettuces too, but with the current ‘ban’ on some lettuces I decided to have lettuce-less salad this week. Look at how beautiful and colorful this food is.  It’s going to be a wonderful eating week.

I haven’t researched what I am about to say here but I think eating some portion of colorful raw vegetables everyday helps to alleviate or lessen many of the physical problems that plague Americans particularly, i.e. constipation, poor immune system, other digestive issues, allergies, mineral deficiencies, blood pressure issues, cholesterol issues, etc.  […again, I’m no doctor or medical professional, so this is strictly my opinion].

I even bought fresh mangos today… I can’t remember the last time I did that; possibly! I never have. 🤔  I’ve had mangos before but never bought fresh ones myself.  They were 3 for .$99 today at Sprouts. Those little beauties came right home with me… yes, they did. 😌

I gained 2-3 pounds over the winter months.😞 Hopefully my summer foods will help to melt those couple of extra pounds away. I am not too worried though because I started a new exercise program and I am slightly more muscular than I’ve been in a long time.  I will share more about it in an upcoming blog sombe sure to FOLLOW my blog .

Now, go get yourself some veggies!

Happy shopping! 🍎🥦🥒🍎🍉🍒🍏🍑🍐🍇🍍🍊🥕

‘Eggspert’ Advice 😏

I  blogged about the benefits of eggs in the past but I have more eggs-pert knowledge to pass along 😏.  People, seriously, I am not the originator of all the juicy facts I share on my blog…. I am just passing along the knowledge so you’ll have some interesting to read when you stop and see me here.  I like research and information so I’m always finding cool stuff.  I’d post more of it here but my day job takes up most of my real life … but no complaints here because it also pays the bills. Can I get an Amen! ✌🏽🙌🏽

Anyway… so I wrote before that I love eggs….and I was eating lots of them… until this year. In January after a horrific sinus infection eggs started giving me the worst indigestion ever.  I was so bummed…. they were a main staple. I usually bought eggs that said Natural, no hormones, yadda yadda on the carton. In other words I bought eggs that were $2 to $3 per carton, not 69 cents.  I stopped eating them for a few weeks but after a severe craving for a boiled egg one day I bought a carton of expensive organic no hormone etc. eggs, about $4.  I boiled a couple and ate them. I waited for that familiar choking sensation in my throat.  Nothing. I had no effect from these eggs. YAY!  Ate them all…. not at one time but over the next few days. I went back to buy more of the less expensive $2 per carton eggs; because I thought my egg issue was over.  Scrambled a couple and within the hour ….suffering. 😩

I was suspicious.  Why some eggs and not others would cause an issue. Shortly after, a friend gave me a dozen fresh, no hormone, farm eggs from some well-loved yard chickens owns by a family member. I took them…. more because I was curious to know how they would affect me. Well, ate them and nothings happened….they were soooo delish.

My conclusion… I think I am having a reaction to egg processing rather than the eggs themselves. Maybe what the chickens are fed, or how they are raised, or stuff injected into mass produced chickens.  I don’t know….I just know that I need friends with chickens…and thankfully I might have a few 🐥🐣

So, here is a tidbit I learned this week. I had a lot of eggs in my refrigerator from testing which would cause and issue and which wouldn’t. After a few weeks I didn’t know if they were still any good. Well, I found a way to determine if your eggs are old or not. This is so cool.

You can do a water test.  I bet everyone knew this except me. Haha. Anyway, you place an egg in a bowl of water.  If it sinks, then it’s fresh.  If it floats, then it’s old so throw it out. Tons of info online but here is a cool illustration I found for you. 569BDE62-3F7B-4DE8-89C8-33E596AFB011Image by Yumi Sakugawa/WonderHowTo

Of course I had to try it myself with my eggs. So, here ya go:

Sure enough, one floated and one sunk. The floating one was much older than the one that sunk. I would have tossed it anyway just by the date alone…. although I hear eggs can last way past the date on the carton. All of my eggs were past the Best Used By date.

There you have it; more info you can share at the dinner table. 🙃😉

Well, that’s all I have for you today!

Blessings on you all…and stay safe out there!

My Secret Weapon for the Holidays

It’s that time of the year when I switch to eating more winter vegetables, i.e. leafy greens, squash, rutabaga, etc.  With the holiday season upon us, I anticipate my diet will include out of the ordinary foods.  I mean, I will likely have more party foods, sugar, snacks, etc. 😏

I do have a strategy that I use to combat the  deluge of food associated with this season. You do know that the more sweets you eat the more you crave because it is addictive in addition to being delicious, right?  Have you noticed how on the day after you eat a lot of food you tend to be more hungry than usual?

Well, the way I combat this is to KEEP a selection of ready to eat vegetables in my refrigerator so when the muchnies hit.  If you are like me, when the hunger strikes I start rambling through the pantry in search of anything….and before I know it I have wolfed hundreds of calories in a matter of minutes.😩. I don’t even think I realized how many calories I could shove into my mouth in such a short time until I actually started tracking with MyFitnessPal. I was shocked! I easily added 500 to 700 calories (or more) in no time. Those little snacks over time add up to extra pounds.

Soooo … my secret (not so secret, really) weapon is having readily available vegetables. I have several Christmas parties scheduled in upcoming weeks so I decided not to purchase too many groceries this week. Instead I cooked some frozen veggies I had already.

This afternoon after church I made three favorites: okra, green beans, brussel sprouts.

F96276B9-82C7-4CD7-8AE9-54CAE290BCF2
Whole Okra, Whole Green Beans, Brussel Sprouts

I used to majorly dislike okra until about five years ago.  Now I love them. You know what? If you get a hunger attack, grab a couple cups of vegetables like this, drink some water and wait about 10 minutes, and the hunger subsides.

Vegetables are full of fiber and vitamins….and low calories! Even if you have other snacks afterwards you won’t want to consume nearly as much, therefore, you will eat less calories.

I am pretty basic in my veggie cooking. I use a teeny bit of coconut oil or olive oil in either my cast iron pan or my copper pan. I use a little bit of water because I’m not making soup here. Water seems to wash out all the flavor. I use high heat, cook them fast. So, my veggies stay green, and are done but not mushy. I add a variety of spices: Himalayan salt, fresh ground pepper, ginger, smoked paprika, curry spice mix, and whatever else looks yummy.  By the way, adding spices reduces the need to add a lot of salt.  That’s it. 😊

Anyway, just thought I’d pass this along in case you needed a strategy to help you get through the season.

Peace and love.

Set Point Theory

“Set point is the weight range in which your body is programmed to function optimally. Set point theory holds that one’s body will fight to maintain that weight range.”

I am wondering if I have reached my set point. In the past 6 months I’ve lost .2 lbs. 🤔   I have done the same as always except I am exercising a bit more.  Shoes have gotten bigger, rings have gotten bigger but no pounds lost. I am not too concerned though. I feel great and healthier.

Matter of fact, I am starting to explore new foods. I met a new friend at church recently and she texted me to go grab a dinner somewhere. We ended up at a new Indian restaurant… Curry Village. I really liked it. Will go again. Very tasty. I’ve grown fond of curry over the past year. Tonight I ordered a basic dish … Curry Chicken. It was a huge portion … this is what I packed up to bring home..enough for two more little meals.

Anyway, going to keep doing what I am doing in terms of making good eating choices and being mindful. I chose this meal tonight because my day was filled with healthy choices of mostly low calorie healthy choices … in other words I had calories to spare. So I tried the Indian Rice Pudding. Boy that was different… certainly not my mother’s rice pudding. This was a mixture of soupy tapioca-like, cold, breakfast cereal ….but…actually tasted good.  I won’t get it again but it was good.

Sorry for the bad photo of it.  I didn’t think to take a picture until after I ate most of it  😂.

That’s all for now. 😊

Peace, love and good food.
