Sneaky Little Pounds

It’s crazy how pounds creep back if I don’t stay diligent in my efforts to stay aware of my food choices.  Sigh. 😒

I am not in trouble yet but I  am see how and why folks lose a bunch of weight then slowly over the following weeks it creeps back on… sometimes more. Here is what I think happens:

1. There is an initial rush of excitement after losing weight.  Your body is in burn mode so you are granted the ability to eat a bit more without any changes to your weight.

2. While being on track, you probably are earning less sugar and carbs and your body has gotten used to it.  However, once you start eating a few more carbs and more sugar, your body will retain fluid, and worse, you get addicted to it again and start to crave it, where during weight loss you hardly thought of it.

3. You probably started exercising less and drinking less water.

4.  Basically,  you just quit paying attention…. eating more and eating out more.

I don’t know…. that’s just what happens to me. I get it, because I have done all of the above.  So, I have gained 3.4 lbs in the past three months  yeah, that’s not a lot but I need to reverse things now, not after I’ve regained 10 or 20… or 30+ pounds.

So, when you see this in my refrigerator… you know I’m back to business.

It’s found to be a green veggie week for sure.  With summer foods coming back in it should be easier to get on track. I love veggies which you know if you have followed my blog. Going to do a lot of raw veggies this week to get a jumpstart.  The fiber fills you up and helps with detox.

My Summer Selections Are Back

When it gets to that time of the year when I go out to one of my favorite grocery stores (Sprouts) and come home with this type of stash, you can rest assured that I am entering into my summer eating pattern. 😊

Washing today’s “catch” in vinegar water.

As much as I love my winter foods (rutabagas, sweet potatoes, squashes, etc.), by this time of the year I am literally craving colorful raw vegetables. Typically, I would have lettuces too, but with the current ‘ban’ on some lettuces I decided to have lettuce-less salad this week. Look at how beautiful and colorful this food is.  It’s going to be a wonderful eating week.

I haven’t researched what I am about to say here but I think eating some portion of colorful raw vegetables everyday helps to alleviate or lessen many of the physical problems that plague Americans particularly, i.e. constipation, poor immune system, other digestive issues, allergies, mineral deficiencies, blood pressure issues, cholesterol issues, etc.  […again, I’m no doctor or medical professional, so this is strictly my opinion].

I even bought fresh mangos today… I can’t remember the last time I did that; possibly! I never have. 🤔  I’ve had mangos before but never bought fresh ones myself.  They were 3 for .$99 today at Sprouts. Those little beauties came right home with me… yes, they did. 😌

I gained 2-3 pounds over the winter months.😞 Hopefully my summer foods will help to melt those couple of extra pounds away. I am not too worried though because I started a new exercise program and I am slightly more muscular than I’ve been in a long time.  I will share more about it in an upcoming blog sombe sure to FOLLOW my blog .

I Think I See How This Works Now

This food-body connection is really a retraining of the head. Even more than losing weight, I really wanted to learn how to keep it off!  That is the big challenge… I’m sure I’ve lost a million pounds in my lifetime, and have gained a million two hundred pounds. 😩.

Well, for the past six plus months I have held steady… that is an accomplishment for me.  I’ve tried to wean myself off of daily weighing and from putting every morsel on a digital scale and logging into My Fitness Pal. I want my brain to KNOW when enough food is enough… and I want to be in control enough to STOP EATING ON TIME. Easier said than done.

However, In the past 6 months something has worked.  I’ve had times when I did overeat and times when I did under-eat. Somehow it balanced out. I’d be up 2 pounds one day, then down 3 pounds a couple days later. I always remained within a 3 pound window plus or minus.  I’m ok with that.  It seems my body is happy at my current weight.  So I don’t fight it. I did start another exercise program that I will blog about in a future blog.

Anyway, I had some mighty wonderful meals over the past month. One of them was this:

Barbecue Nachos

Barbecue Chicken Nachos from Cue Barbecue.  This was one of the most delicious things I’d had in two years. Great day!  This is definitely going on the treat-list.

Then, during a week of meetings for work I tried something that I swore I’d  ever eat – guess I was feeling adventuresome.  Yeah, I tried it:  Hot Chili Alligator from Henry’s Louisiana Grill …. it was good too; not fishy, not spongy, didn’t taste like chicken, didn’t taste like fish… tasted like…. alligator.🐊  I’m sure it being fried helped 👍🏽

Unfortunately, Henry’s was only 1 of several restaurant meals that week. By Friday, I literally didn’t want to eat anything and pretty much didn’t.

On Monday I ate lay out 1000 calories all day which included four types of vegetables (collard greens, turnip greens, cabbage, and rutabaga) and a lot of water, lemon water and tea.

Feeling better already. It’s crazy how my diet during that week made me feel so sluggish.

Anyway, all this to say, I think I see how this works.  There is no getting ON a diet and getting OFF a diet for me.  There is only food awareness and balance; knowing what’s going in my mouth and knowing when to stop. 🛑   Dang! Took me 50 years to learn that. 😒. Better late than never. ✌🏽

My Secret Weapon for the Holidays

It’s that time of the year when I switch to eating more winter vegetables, i.e. leafy greens, squash, rutabaga, etc.  With the holiday season upon us, I anticipate my diet will include out of the ordinary foods.  I mean, I will likely have more party foods, sugar, snacks, etc. 😏

I do have a strategy that I use to combat the  deluge of food associated with this season. You do know that the more sweets you eat the more you crave because it is addictive in addition to being delicious, right?  Have you noticed how on the day after you eat a lot of food you tend to be more hungry than usual?

Well, the way I combat this is to KEEP a selection of ready to eat vegetables in my refrigerator so when the muchnies hit.  If you are like me, when the hunger strikes I start rambling through the pantry in search of anything….and before I know it I have wolfed hundreds of calories in a matter of minutes.😩. I don’t even think I realized how many calories I could shove into my mouth in such a short time until I actually started tracking with MyFitnessPal. I was shocked! I easily added 500 to 700 calories (or more) in no time. Those little snacks over time add up to extra pounds.

Soooo … my secret (not so secret, really) weapon is having readily available vegetables. I have several Christmas parties scheduled in upcoming weeks so I decided not to purchase too many groceries this week. Instead I cooked some frozen veggies I had already.

This afternoon after church I made three favorites: okra, green beans, brussel sprouts.

I used to majorly dislike okra until about five years ago.  Now I love them. You know what? If you get a hunger attack, grab a couple cups of vegetables like this, drink some water and wait about 10 minutes, and the hunger subsides.

Vegetables are full of fiber and vitamins….and low calories! Even if you have other snacks afterwards you won’t want to consume nearly as much, therefore, you will eat less calories.

I am pretty basic in my veggie cooking. I use a teeny bit of coconut oil or olive oil in either my cast iron pan or my copper pan. I use a little bit of water because I’m not making soup here. Water seems to wash out all the flavor. I use high heat, cook them fast. So, my veggies stay green, and are done but not mushy. I add a variety of spices: Himalayan salt, fresh ground pepper, ginger, smoked paprika, curry spice mix, and whatever else looks yummy.  By the way, adding spices reduces the need to add a lot of salt.  That’s it. 😊

Anyway, just thought I’d pass this along in case you needed a strategy to help you get through the season.

Having My Burger And Eating It Too

I know I am probably late to the party, as usual, on this but I discovered something that has made me quite happy.

I’m not a big meat eater as I mentioned in previous blogs however, every few months  or so I just flat out crave a hamburger. I am not fond of fast food burgers primarily because of the calories, the bready buns, the greasiness ….  buuuuuutttt…… I was browsing through some nutrition pages recently and saw something about Bunless Burgers…. huh?

Peaked my interest so I followed the link to Five Guys Burgers and Fries and saw they offered their burgers and hots in a bunless version. Seriously?  OK, everyone knew this except me I’m sure but I don’t eat at burger joints.

Anyway, I had to try it and this is what I got:

You can’t tell in the photo but there are two parties there. I ordered a regular burger with all the veggie toppings. It was so good. I got my burger and veggies and no guilt.

You can get it in a tin container like I did or if you need the ‘sandwich’ effect they will wrap it in lettuce so you can hold it.

Definitely a keeper find! Plan to do this again when I have another beef attack.
